Hey
I have a Lifan 140 and on the weekend I lost 3rd gear. All other gears work except when changing into 3rd it is as if I am changing into nuetral?
Any suggestions on what may have happened or just somewhere to start to try and fix it would be appreciated
triggy.
It sounds like you may have broken off the drive dogs on 3rd gear.If this is the case the crankcases must be split to repair the damage Dude !..A major pain in the Butt I am afraid.....
Cheers Brian

Bent selector fork. Though thats normally shown by a rough shift. Brian sounds right that the gear itself is destroyed. Although normally 2nd gear is the first to go.

Thanks for the advice Brian you were spot on. Pulled the motor down tonight and the dogs on third gear had all sheared off. Where is the best place to bug a new 3rd gear if possible and a complete set of gaskets?
Someone has also mentioned to me that replacing the shift forks is wise to do aswell?
Thanks
If any of you people want to treat your trannies roughly I'd suggest stripping your motors when new and getting the complete transmission cryo treated . Rkfinch talked about it along with R.E.M ( Rare Earth Metal Treatment) for keeping chinese trannies alive under hard riding conditions .
The engines are cheap and top value for the $$$$$ but people need to understand that they are based on a 60's to 70's design for use in smoothly and sensibly ridden step thru's and scooters . Doing quick impatient racing shifts and whipping the clutch out ...... shifting without using the clutch ...... revving and dropping the clutch etc will kill any stock horizontal motors' tranny pretty quickly .
To keep the price down - the gears are obviously made with a lot of the heat treatment processes skipped .
IMO most of the tranny problems such as busted off dog lugs are caused by lousy clutch and throttle timing during shifting OR not using the clutch at all ........ if you shift under load or with any drive whatsoever on the clutch ....... the edges of the dogs smash/clash into the edges of the slots in the driven gear and the shock of the impact and leverage will eventually cause them to snap off . Also if your foot rides the shift lever when you're not shifting or you have to force the gear in ...... you will wear the shift forks and that will cause all sorts of trouble .........

Ok that pretty much answers my question, on my track you have to shift like mad and I allways shift really fast and hard but never without the clutch.
You know your stuff! I think one of main week points in these chinese bikes is engine, the bike would last alot longer the engine stayed alive longer.
The 2008 motovert pro comes with a 125 daytona japan engine, thats what I need!!
