Cant get new engine to work!

Well its not my new engine its my old one which my brother smased the cdi unit off soo i jus bought a new engine, but the gear box as messed up on ma new engine, soo the problem is this, ive fully mounted my engine im prity sure the wireing is correct as wen i kik it i got a spark but does it matter how big that spark is becoz ive stuk ma old cdi unit bak on i think its cdi unit (its the plastic thing at the side of the fly wheel) wen i put the spark plug in and atach the ht lead it sounds like it wants to fire but it aint n im confised on what to do. so if you could giv me as many suggestions as possible please it would be very helpful thankyou

Unless the spark plug is attached to the block you wont get spark (use a car jumber lead if you cant hold it against the head). If you have spark, fuel (I assume you have fuel? check anyway) and compression it is most likley a timing issue. I think there is already a thred on here about how to adjust the timing.
